What To Buy for Prepping: Malaysian Stores You Need to Know

About Prepping and Why It Is Important

Prepping is not for a selected few. It is a practical approach to being prepared for the unexpected. In Malaysia, we may not have many natural disasters. However, we should learn from situations we have experienced like the 2021 flood that impacted a few major areas, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Prepping can help ensure that your family has enough food, water and medical supplies and also provide you with peace of mind in this unpredictable world.

Fortunately, Malaysia is a home to a wide variety of stores for all prepping supplies. In this article, I will be sharing Malaysian stores (or overseas stores that deliver to Malaysia at a reasonable price) so that you can start building a solid prepping kit without breaking the bank.

Prepping Supplies: What You Need to Survive

Before diving into what to buy and where to buy it, it is essential to understand the basics of prepping. Prepping is not about hoarding supplies; it is about thoughtful planning to ensure you and your family can weather emergencies with minimal disruption. Below are categories of prepping supplies you will need:

Food and Water

The most important survival necessities. Long-lasting food and reliable water supply are essential for any emergency.

What to look out for:

  • Non-perishable food: Canned goods, instant noodles, rice, freeze-dried meals
  • Water storage: Bottled water, collapsible water containers, and portable water filters

  • Common medications for fever, pain, and allergies
  • Hygiene products like hand sanitizer, wet wipes, gloves, and face masks.

Survival Tools

During emergency scenarios, it is important to have tools that can help you be slightly more comfortable.

What to look out for:

  • Multi-purpose tools (e.g. Swiss Army knives, multi-purpose tools)
  • Fire starter and waterproof matches
  • Flashlight, headlamps, and extra batteries.

Key Considerations for Malaysian Preppers

Due to our high humidity and highly unpredictable weather, it is also important to tailor your strategy (stocking up on food, survival items to keep) to make sure that your efforts are practical, effective, and suited to your environment. A few areas to take note:

Humidity-Resistant Items and Storage

  • Invest in moisture-proof containers or vacuum-sealed bags to protect food, clothing, and tools from humidity.
  • Use silica gel packs or dehumidifiers in storage areas to prevent mold and mildew.

Food grade desiccant and oxygen absorber – do note that there are non-food silica gel, so you want to refer to the information in the link above for full details.

Mosquito Repellents

  • Stock up on insect repellents (DEET or citronella-based), mosquito coils, and electric insect zappers.
  • Consider mosquito nets for sleeping areas, especially if you anticipate spending time outdoors.

Rain Gear

  • Waterproof tarps, ponchos, and sturdy umbrellas are must-haves for outdoor survival.

Tropical-Friendly Food Storage

  • Heat and humidity can spoil food faster. Opt for food with robust packaging designed for tropical climates, such as vacuum-sealed or canned products.
  • Rotate your food stock regularly to prevent spoilage.

Local Food Staples

  • Include easy-to-prepare Malaysian staples like instant noodles, rice, sambal, and curry pastes in your emergency food kit.

Compact and Stackable Storage

  • Use stackable bins or modular shelves to maximize vertical storage.
  • Invest in vacuum-sealable bags for clothing, blankets, and other soft goods to save space.
  • Opt for collapsible water containers and foldable camping gear.
