In today’s world where everyone uses smartphones with cutting-edge features, ultra-fast 5G, AI capabilities, and superb camera features, would the basic Nokia phone still be relevant? For those who have owned Nokia phones during the 1980s and 1990s, you will definitely remember the iconic Nokia 3310 or Nokia 1100 (reportedly sold 250 million units globally) or any other similar phones that are basic yet robust.
I used to own a basic Nokia phone, which was durable, simple and has a battery life of 20+ days! I can even type a message with eyes closed. On top of all that, the phone is super robust. I recall the phone slipping out of my hand while I was rushing outdoors, it fell on the ground and everything came apart – keypad, battery, cover – and all it takes is to assemble it, and it is working fine.
I recall my late mother insisting on getting a basic Nokia phone replacement as she couldn’t get used to the smartphones. Her reason: Nokia has very clear display (monochrome, black and white) which is easy for her to see, no-nonsense menu which is easy to navigate, and the sound quality is loud & clear (she constantly complains of the gentle sounds of the smartphone ring tones). All she needed was a simple phone that functions minus all the complexities.
Nokia Phones Still Exist?
I was scrolling through the Shopee marketplace recently to purchase a basic phone (I will explain later why) and came across a lot of Nokia phones. I bought one many years back for RM50 and quickly realized that it was a Nokia counterfeit or knockoff phone from China. These devices are typically produced by unauthorized manufacturers attempting to replicate the design and/or appearance of popular phones. The quality of these phones is horrendous – almost unusable. My advice is to not buy any of these because you are just wasting your money as you bin them almost immediately.
So I was on a journey to find reliable good phones that were similar to the old basic Nokia phone – with long battery life and robust build. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across a “Nokia Mobile Flagship Store” but as I was skeptical, I did a quick research on the authenticity and here’s what I found:
- Nokia phones are now produced by HMD Global (Human Mobile Devices), a Finnish company that has been manufacturing and marketing Nokia phones since 2016.
- The exact terminology used by HMD for the Nokia phone that we know of is “Feature Phones“, as per in the official website.
- Besides feature phones, they also have smartphones and tablets, all which are HMD branded. Just so you know, they are the same manufacturer with the well-known Nokia branded phones.
The Backstory on HMD Global
HMD Global’s Role: In 2016, HMD Global, founded by former Nokia executives, acquired the rights to the Nokia brand for mobile phones and tablets. HMD licenses the Nokia brand name and focuses on producing Nokia-branded Android smartphones and feature phones. They aim to combine Nokia’s brand heritage with modern hardware and software.
Nokia’s Rise: Nokia was once a global leader in mobile phones, especially during the late 1990s and early 2000s, thanks to iconic models like the Nokia 3310 and Nokia 1100. Back in those days, only those with more budget could afford a Nokia 8000-series. The phone is sleeker, build is tougher and feels premium to touch. Today, it has an amazing 27+ days standby time! Currently not in stock. Priced at RM299.

I love flip phones – you can’t accidentally butt-dial someone. The only option available was this pink Barbie phone. Still a consideration if you like flip phones. Priced at RM549.
