#11 Sri Seronok Retirement Village in Cheras Kuala Lumpur

Probably one of its kind, Sri Seronok Retirement Village was established in 1988 on a 2-acre land in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Sri Seronok is targeted for those who are at least 55 years old and able to look after yourself. In short, you need to be independent and be able to care for your own needs. Those who are qualified and subject to availability to space will get to live in a comfortable, self-contained unit with landscaped gardens in a secure and friendly environment. The nice thing about Sri Seronok is that it truly embodies the independent lifestyle – with no schedule of activities of fixed visiting hours. There are limited units in Seri Seronok and from what I’ve read, there is a long waiting list. In my opinion, most independent senior living should be similar to this – as long as the resident is still healthy and/or able to take care of themselves – why create a prison-like environment with all sorts of restrictions? (This is from my own experience after making enquiries and asking related questions. If I am to live in one, I don’t want to be confined and slapped with restrictions that are senseless)

#12 Takahashi Legend Care in Petaling Jaya Selangor

I was intrigued when I came across this because this is an assisted living with a lot more flexibility. This purpose-built assisted living home is a joint venture between Medical Care Services (MCS) of Japan and New Legend. Located in Petaling Jaya (Jalan SS 2/3), Takahashi is a 15,000 sq ft facility close to Taman Bahagia LRT station and within Assunta, University and Pantai hospitals. From the website, it is an assisted living residential home for the elderly with no fixed regimes! Residents get to choose when to get up, when to take a bath, when to eat, when to go to bed and when they want to partake in activities. Visitors can visit anytime, and family members are encouraged to come as often as they can. Residents are also free to go out with their friends and family. They treat each resident as a unique individual, and they will find a balance that suits their needs. How nice!! Their facility can cater for up to 34 residents. For those who require assisted living, this sounds extremely pleasant. (Personal note: I like the idea of no fixed regime because everyone is different – I hate to be in a prison-like environment and be asked to wake up at 6am to bathe etc – especially when you are paying a lot for such facility & care. I hope all other old folks home and assisted living will do the same. You will never know how it feels to be in the situation until you are in one. I’ve seen this happening to a very close relative, so I truly get it)
